Have you ever used a product because you saw a commercial that featured your favorite celebrity using that specific product?

Your answer: Yes! The reason for this is because sponsoring and endorsing celebrities is a great way for brands to gain media attention.

The celebrities mentioned in the infographic are among the most sponsored in the entertainment industry. Believe it or not, David Beckham and Kim Kardashian get 90% of their revenue from sponsorships. Justin Timberlake and Beyonce have recently been on the wave of being sponsored. Sofia Vergara has been sponsored since about a couple years ago, when her show “Modern Family” went big.

Amazingly, Kim Kardashian gets paid to endorse companies on her Twitter account. She can earn a minimum of $20,000 for a tweet that endorses a product.(Source)

So why do marketers choose these celebrities to be sponsors for their brands? The answer is very simple: Fame. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake are this years’ talk in the entertainment industry with a tour coming up (Beyonce) and a new CD release (J.T). Once sofia Vergara’s fame grew so did her endorsements. It’s all about who is the “it” celebrity and who is being talked about more in a positive way.

Check out the infographic I made below for more information

Question: What’s a popular condiment that’s white?

Answer: Mayo

All 3 answers = Cinco de Mayo! Since it’s this Sunday, we decided to share some cool last minute ideas for your event or party!

Cinco de Mayo Table Setting

Look at all those festive colors!

Pinata Cookies

Click the image to see the recipe!

It wouldn’t be Cinco de Mayo without margaritas so here’s the recipe for the ‘Ultimate Margarita’:

1 oz. GranGala Triple Orange Liqueur 1 oz. Premium gold tequila, such as El Charro 1 oz. Fresh lime juice Salt A fresh lime Rub the rim of a cocktail glass with a fresh-cut wedge of lime. Spin the glass in salt. Shake vigorously GranGala Triple Orange Liqueur, tequila and fresh lime juice with ice in a shaker. Strain into glass and garnish with a slice of lime.

The MTV Movie Awards is a little different from our usual fancy Oscars and Academy Awards, with a little more hip in both the audience and construction of the show. First aired in 1992 the show has always started off with a spoof version of different popular movies that was released that same year and some artist will perform music hits at the same time. Considering that this is a movie award show, music performance was implemented as well (They pretty much took the standardized version of a movie awards and added a twist to it).

This year, the award took place at the Sony Picture Studio, with actress Rebel Wilson who starred in last year’s Comedy Musical “Perfect Pitch” hosting the event.

Notable Sponsors during the Award show was Chevrolet, Dr.Pepper, Revlon, Taco Bell, & Unilever.

Chevrolet & MTV team up to bring “Film your way to the MTV Awards 2013

MTV and Chevrolet invited aspiring filmmakers from all over the country to submit their concepts for an innovative short film featuring the Chevy Sonic. The winning submission, “Never Let You Go,” came from an 18-year-old Joaquin Palma, an aspiring film director from Bronx, New York.

Dr.Pepper featured Pitbull in its new “One of a Kind” Campaign commercials that aired during the Awards.

Pitbull grew up in a family of immigrants and followed his dream relentlessly until he finally became one of the biggest recording artists in the country. That makes him one of a kind.

Taco Bell unveiled it’s “First Kiss” Commercial During the Awards.

“Doritos Locos Tacos is said to make you do things, you have never done before” With the release of their new Cool Ranch taco, Taco Bell walks the line between naive and vulgar in its latest commercial, featuring a teenage boy going in for his first kiss in his parents’ minivan.

There was also the Axe (Unilever) ad featuring “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey getting passed up for an astronaut; Revlon also ran a #CASTASPELL campaign on Twitter so that one lucky fan can win two tickets to the MTV Movie Awards. Which was your favorite sponsorship activation during the show?

With all the technology we have now days one would think that a “brain” research would already be in the works, but it hasn’t until now.

Yesterday, President Obama has proposed $100 million in federal funding to seed an exhaustive brain mapping initiative. This new project will be called “BRAIN,” and it will take a major step in finding cures for diseases such as Autism and Alzheimer’s. Another major result that can happen from this research is the possibility of reversing traumatic brain injuries and PTSD. The ultimate aim is to learn how the brain generates thoughts, dreams, memories, perceptions and other mental images; how it stores and retrieves data; and how it learns from experience or education.

BRAIN, will create high-tech jobs for Americans as well help the economy grow. With this research it will generate new technologies in data processing, nanotechnology, optogenetics and other fields to study how billions of brain cells and complex neural circuits interact.

The possibilities BRAIN will generate for the tech/start-up industry are endless. By knowing how the brain ultimately works, apps can be generated to reveal ones dreams, memories, and mental images. Technology can be more human like so that it can feel and think as humans do. Chips can be invented to reconstruct a human brain and work side by side with your smart phone or computer.

Imagine, a new app that can transfer your dreams onto your phone so you can show people or so you can remember your dreams. Tired of being forgetful? How about an app that can show you all your memories as well as delete the ones you don’t want. There might just be an app or device that records all your thoughts. With this project we might just be able to access all parts of our brains by the help of future apps, devices, and software.

I predict that once we see the results of the BRAIN project, there will be an even bigger rise on start-ups and the tech industry. The current rise of start-ups that we are experiencing now, will be nothing compared to what is to come with this project.

What are some ideas you will create with the results of the BRAIN project?

Major companies like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft all started as ideas in the minds of college students. College campuses are usually unique communities comprised of ambitious and creative people– a great environment for coming up with new companies. The only problem is, students are often faced with financial struggles and can’t scrounge up enough initial capital to launch their ideas to a reality while still in school.

Recent strides have been made to help raise capital such as companies like Kickstarter and Upstart through crowdsourcing. But for a student that already have their hands tied with school debt, bootstrapping isn’t usually a viable option, Kickstarter only works if people have money, and juggling 26 units doesn’t leave a lot of time for venture capitalist meetings (if they manage to snag a meeting).

So now what?

An innovative venture fund called Dorm Room Fund puts the power of investing into student’s hands. The concept behind First Round Capital’s Dorm Room Fund is to have an investment team comprised of students to invest in startups in their university communities. First Round Capital committed $500,000 to the fund when it launched in Philadelphia last year. Students on the team chose startups to invest $10,000 to $20,000 in, which is usually all these startups need to get off the ground. They are also able to provide the entrepreneurs with mentors, office space, publicity, and downstream capital opportunities once the startup has taken off.

Dorm Room Fund is a mutually beneficial tool to the student investment team and student entrepreneurs as both groups gain valuable learning experience while still in school. After the success of the fund in Philadelphia (including its funding of firefly which is a cobrowsing software), they are starting up in New York City with the high density of college campuses and thriving startup nature of the city in mind.

With Dorm Room Fund’s spread to other cities nationwide, it can be a valuable resource to future college students with entrepreneurial aspirations.

When you think of the NCAA Tournament, the first things that come to mind are upsets, rivalries, and of course, the next crop of NBA superstars. With NBA superstars, they’re sure to get some sweet sponsorship deals from the likes of Nike, Under Armour, Gatorade, and the like. We’ll be looking at the Top 4 Men’s college basketball players who have the greatest potential to land one of these deals in the future.

Shabazz Muhammad

Shabazz Muhammad is a freshman shooting guard for the UCLA Bruins, the most decorated team in NCAA Basketball history with 11 titles. He is the Co-Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and on the All-Pac-12 First Team. Muhammad is as dynamic of a scoring threat as there is in the college game, and that is sure to translate to the pros. The fact that he will be a UCLA alum will only add to his personal brand. Elite scorers are also hotter commodities and get those coveted sneaker deals (think Jordan, Kobe, Lebron). With a unique name like ‘Shabazz’, he’s sure to have some kind of deals locked down.

Otto Porter

Otto “Otto-matic” Porter is a sophomore small forward for the Georgetown Hoyas and just won the Big East Player of the Year Award. This is a huge deal considering the Big East is usually considered the top basketball conference in the country. Being a Syracuse alum, it hurts to complement a Georgetown player, but Porter’s talent is off the charts. He leads the Hoyas in scoring and rebounding, and has just dominated since Big East play has started. His silky smooth game and ties to a school that’s produced the likes of Patrick Ewing and Allen Iverson bodes well for his future.

Marcus Smart

Marcus Smart received both the Big 12 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Awards (Kevin Durant accomplished the same thing). He’s a very strong and tough combo guard who has been compared to James Harden of the Houston Rockets. Smart has Harden’s creativity when scoring, but is stronger. Athletic guard that finds creative ways to score? Nike should be calling soon.

Ben McLemore

Ben McLemore is a redshirt freshman shooting guard for the Kansas Jayhawks, another school with a basketball rich history. He is on the All-Big 12 First Team. His game is frequently compared to Ray Allen because of his superior athleticism and sweet shooting ability. Could he be the second coming of Jesus Shuttleworth?

Which of these athletes would you put your sponsorship dollars towards?

There has been over 486 new start-ups in NYC since 2007.

BuzzFeed, FourSquare, General Assembly, Songza, and Tumblr are some of the well-known names in NYC’s start-up scene. BuzzFeed for example credits NYC for the rapid growth of their company, which started at 15 employees and is now at 215 employees.

The number of employees in tech start-ups has grown by 80 percent between 2007 and 2011. There is now a 38 percent more job creation opportunity for NYC start-ups.

The “Made in NY” campaign started a couple years ago but last month, Mayor Bloomberg launched the “Made in NY” campaign for tech start-ups. This campaign helps promote city tech start-ups. “Made in NY,” helps boost the industry and connects New Yorkers to tech jobs through an ad campaign that will feature throughout the city. The campaign’s website features 900 city tech start-ups that will provide information on which company is hiring as well as profiles of businesses.

I never would have thought that New York will dominate over Silicon Valley. Having all these new tech start-ups based in New York is an accomplishment for the city and a better opportunity to open up the job market. As a college student, this campaign is great to find jobs, internships and to familiarize yourself with the next big companies.

For more on the campaign click here

What do you think of the “Made in NY” campaign? How will this campaign benefit you and others?
